VOTING RIGHTS ACT EXTENSION
CLEARS CONGRESS
On
July 20, the Congress finally passed and sent to the President for signature,
the bill to reauthorize and extend the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The
bloody history in this country which led to passage of the original act
is outlined in an article published on April, 2005, on this site, on the
40th anniversary of Black Sunday (which provided the final impetus for
enactment of the VRA). (A copy of that article can be found in the archieves
on this web site.) The reauthorization is a grand achievement, accomplished
over the objections, screams, and obstreperousness of the Texas Republican
congressional delegation. Our own Congressmember Al Green, a former chair
of the NAACP here, explains the importance of this legislation and what
it means to everyone interested in eradicating discrimination and advancing
equality in our society:
