MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR:
HCDP Passes Resolutions Commemorating BROWN V. BOARD OF EDUCATION Supreme Court Decision

WHEREAS, fifty years ago this week the Supreme Court of the United States announced its historic decision in the landmark case, Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Shawnee County, Kansas, wherein it decreed an immediate end to state-sponsored racial segregation; and

WHEREAS, Brown embodies many of the most cherished principles of the Democratic Party - the imperative of equal opportunity for all, the unacceptability of discrimination in any form, the realization that public education as one of the most important functions of government, and the abiding and over-arching truth that respect for all people is the cornerstone of a just society; and

WHEREAS, the effect of Brown v. Board of Education has been to make us all better and more deserving of our special place in this world and its history, and the legacy of Brown has been to empower generations of Americans to contribute meaningfully to this country and, indeed, to all of mankind;

NOW THEREFORE, PREMISED CONSIDERED

BE IT RESOLVED that the Democratic Party of Harris County acknowledges the special importance of Brown v. Board of Education to our maturity and decency as a society; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Democratic Party of Harris County commit and rededicate itself to the principles of equality, fairness, non-discrimination, and justice the Brown decision teaches; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Democratic Party of Harris County recognizes from Brown the indispensable importance of fair-minded and non-ideological Justices on the Supreme Court of the United States in order to achieve, safeguard, and maintain social justice and preserve fundamental personal and constitutional rights; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Democratic Party of Harris County will do everything in its power to advance and support the values and objectives of Brown v. Board of Education and the candidacy of individuals who understand and work to further them, and to realize, with all deliberate speed, its grand and noble promise.

UNANIMOUSLY ADOPTED by the County Executive Committee of the Harris County Democratic Party duly assembled in Houston, Harris County, Texas, on the 20th day of May, 2004, to witness which I have hereto affixed my signature.

Gerry Birnberg
Chair, Harris County Democratic Party
