Spotlight on Local Democratic Clubs | Meyerland Democrats
Founded in 2002, the Meyerland Area Democrats Club (MADC or “MeyDems”) was formed with the of serving as the Democratic answer to grassroots clubs of opposing parties in the Meyerland area. Eight years later, it continues to successfully promote the Democratic Party in one of Harris County’s most crucial electoral battlegrounds.
The Meyerland neighborhood is located in southwest Houston. Its citizens reside in either the 7th or 9th U.S. Congressional Districts. MeyDems supports the entire Meyerland subdivision, and its reach stretches to neighboring communities covering nearly 20 local precincts. MeyDems President Alan Guttman states, “The Club’s main goals are to raise awareness by presenting speakers in areas of interest to Democrats and Meyerland area residents; grassroots development to elect more Democratic candidates; and having fun through a variety of social events.”

In the past year alone, MeyDems has hosted such notable speakers as: U.S. Congressman Al Green, Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia, Harris County Attorney Vince Ryan, and Texas State Representatives Scott Hochberg, Ellen Cohen, Al Edwards, and Dr. Alma Allen.
MeyDems has become a staple of Harris County’s grassroot effort with its “Turn Meyerland Blue” campaign, which advises volunteers on “10 things you can do to turn Meyerland Blue,” according to the Club’s website and Facebook page. It has sponsored local trainings for precinct captains and hosted several phonebanking efforts.
MeyDems also sponsor a Candidates’ Dessert Social, which brings together members’ favorite activities: serving the community, promoting Democratic ideals and candidates, and indulging in some tasty treats.
This year, the MeyDems has taken an active role in the Harris County Democratic Party’s Coordinated Campaign’s Surge for Success program, already contacting and reaching out to scores of voters in the area.
